Missionaries of the Sacred Heart
The Congregation Missionarii Sacratissimi Cordis Jesu or (MSC) was founded by Father Jules Chevalier in Issoudun, France on December 8, 1854. “Father Jules Chevalier was deeply moved by the evils that afflicted the people of his time. As he contemplated the Heart of Christ, in whom is revealed the compassionate love of the Father, he discovered the remedy for the ills of the world… “(MSC Constitution and Statutes. No. 3)
The first MSC arrived in the Philippines in 1908. They were first assigned in the provinces of Surigao and Agusan in Mindanao. Later, the MSCs accepted other areas like Cebu in the Visayas, and in Luzon: Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, and Metro Manila.
At present, there are around 2,160 members working in forty seven (47) different countries covering Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, and South America. In the Philippines, the MSCs are working in parishes, schools, communications and mass media, chaplaincies, justice and peace movements, community organizing, ecological preservations, apostolate with tribal Filipinos, farmers, workers, fishermen, and foreign missions.
Chevalier School
In 1958, the late Most Reverend Bishop Emilio Cinense, D.D. and his council decided to lease to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, a lot of three hectares for ninety nine (99) years. The lot is to be used for Catholic education, Fr. Cornelio Lagerway, MSC was assigned by the MSC Superior to build a minor seminary, It was called Sacred Heart Mission Seminary of Pampanga, Inc. so as to distinguish it from our Sacred Heart Seminary of Lawaan, Cebu (now bought by Don Bosco for their minor seminary). From 1960-67, only intern and extern students were accepted at the same time. In 1972, only extern students were accepted.
The name of the school was changed to Chevalier School ( the same name with other school and colleges run by Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in other countries) in 1978 after the name of the MSC Father Founder – Father Jules Chevalier.
Grade five (5) and six (6) were added in 1976. The complete Elementary Course offered in 1987. The Kindergarten and the Preparatory years were opened in 1991.
