Our History
Missionaries of the Sacred Heart
The Congregation Missionarii Sacratissimi Cordis Jesu (MSC) was founded by Father Jules Chevalier in Issoudun, France on December 08, 1854. “Father Jules Chevalier was deeply moved by the evils that afflicted the people of his time. As he contemplated the Heart of Christ, in who was revealed his compassionate love of the Father, he discovered there the remedy for ills of the world…” (MSC Constitution and Statutes No. 3)
The first MSC arrived in the Philippines in 1908. They were first assigned in the provinces of Surigao and Agusan in Mindanao. Later, the MSCs accepted other areas like Cebu in Visayas, and in Luzon: Pampanga, Nueva Ecija and Metro Manila.
At present, there are around 2,160 members working in forty-seven (47) different countries covering Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa, New Zealand, Pacific Islands and South America. In the Philippines, the MSCs are working in parishes, schools, communications and mass media, chaplaincies, justice and peace movements, community organizing, ecological preservations, apostolate with tribal Filipinos, farmers, workers, fishermen and foreign missions.
Chevalier School
In 1958, the late Most Reverend Emilio Cinense, D.D. and his council decided to lease to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, a lot of three (3) hectares for ninety- nine (99) years. The lot is to be used for Catholic Education. Father Cornelio Lagerway was assigned by the MSC Superior to build a minor seminary. It was called Sacred Heart Mission Seminary of Pampanga, Inc. so as to distinguish it from our Sacred Heart Seminary Lawaan, Cebu (now brought by Don Bosco for their minor seminary). From 1960 – 76, only intern and extern students were accepted.
The name of the school was changed to Chevalier School (the same name with other school and colleges run by Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in other countries) in 1978 after the name of the MSC Father Founder – Father Jules Chevalier.
Grades five (5) and six (6) were added in 1976. The complete Elementary levels were offered in 1987. The Kindergarten and the preparatory levels were opened in 1991, while the Nursery in 2007.
